Learn, Keep, Do

Our Devotional for this month comes from Mrs. Barbara LeBlanc from Maranatha Baptist Church in Lyons, New York.

Learn, Keep, Do

Deuteronomy 5:1

Moses gave a threefold command to all God’s people. He told them to hear what he had to say because the Lord had spoken to him so he could share it with them. First, he said to “learn” the statutes and judgments. Today we would say it as the Word of God, or the Bible. In order to learn it we must receive it by listening to Godly leaders, such as a pastor, youth leader, or Sunday School teacher. Deuteronomy 17:19 and 31:12 repeat the command to hear from Godly leaders. We gather together at places such as church, Christian school or camp, or at home with your parents. Then you will learn to fear the Lord and honor your parents by obeying them. Of course, you should also read God’s Word and learn for yourself what He commands by studying and memorizing Scripture. God will teach you what you need to know when you pray and ask Him. Second, Moses said to “keep” his command. In Genesis 30:27, Laban told Jacob that he “learned by experience” how he could be blessed. Jacob was Godly, and when he was living on Laban’s property, God blessed him as well. You can learn to keep God’s Word by being around Godly friends and relatives, too, and be blessed. If you spend much time hanging around with those who do not follow God’s commands, you will learn their ways, not the Lord’s. (read Psalm 106:35 and Jeremiah 10:2). Third, you must “do” what you have heard, learned, and kept in your mind. It is not enough just to listen, read, and memorize what God says; you must actually do the things you know are right. Philippians 4:8-9 lists eight Godly thoughts that you must put into practice if you want peace in your life. Romans 15:4 reminds us that the words written in our Bibles, both Old and New Testament are there so we will have patience, comfort, and hope. Jesus Himself instructs us to “learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29) So learn about God from Godly people. Keep faithful in your own study of the Bible so you may know God’s commands and what He expects of Christians. Then “do all the words of this law.” God will bless you!
