Doing Small things with Character

Our September devotional comes from Bethany Senecal from Heritage Baptist Church in Palmyra, N.Y.

 - Doing the Small Things with Character -

Hello, everyone! My name is Bethany Senecal, and I am one of 13 children. Ever since we were little our parents would make sure that we were a part of every event our church hosted. Whenever there was a need, whether there was another family that needed help, an older church member, or just something around the church building, they made sure that we participated in meeting that need. Doing things with our friends, learning how to be of the most help, and even the recognition we would receive, became something that we loved.

When it came time to help around the house, however; it was never that simple. When you have 15 people in a home, one person is not able to keep it in order on their own; everyone needs to help. We each had assigned chores and were expected to make sure that they were done in a timely fashion and to the best of our ability. And that is where my topic comes in to play: doing the small things with character.

When there is no one that you are especially worried about (like your friends) watching you, it can become very difficult to consistently do the things you are supposed to do in the manner in which you are supposed to do them. "Doing hard things is how we exercise our bodies, our minds, and our faith. Small hard things are the individual repetitions -- like a single push-up. They are seeminglinsignificant by themselves but guaranteed to get results over time." - Do Hard Things

Jesus Christ, Himself, encourages us to do the small things to the best of our ability: "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.Luke 16:10 "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." 1Corinthians 10:31 "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;" - Colossians 3:23 Galatians 6:7 says, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." "Every action, no matter how small, is defining our future harvest. Small seeds can make big weeds, but they can also produce beautiful flowers or feed a nation." Do Hard Things

Your youth is the time in which you will build the habits that will last you a lifetime. Learning now to do the small things with character, such as doing your chores at home well, will prepare you for a future that will bless you and everyone around you. Someday, like my parents, you will be able to lead your family to help others and instill the godly trait of having character in the little things in their lives as well. You will leave a legacy that will allow God to say, "Well done."
