Ceasar: An Unwilling Servant

“And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed…and all went to be taxed, everyone into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, into the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) To be taxed with Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child.” The Gospel of Luke tells us that Caesar made a decree which caused Joseph to take Mary to Bethlehem, and of course, that is where Jesus was born. When Caesar made that decree, I’m sure he was not thinking “Yes, this will be perfect timing to fulfill Micah’s prophecy about the coming Messiah.” No, he was thinking “Money, money, money! Money for my Empire! Get me more money!”

God can use whoever he wants, whenever he wants. Whether or not you want what God wants to happen- it’s going to happen. God can use you whether you are serving Him or not. God can use anyone- saved or unsaved, serving Him or not serving Him.

“So,” you think, “what is the point of following all the rules if God can use me to do what he wants anyway?” We are happiest when we are ‘following all the rules’ (living in the will of God) and will be blessed by God if we are striving to be like Christ and to be used by Him. You will do what God wants whether you want to or not- you might as well get the blessing while you do it. We don’t do things for the Lord to be blessed, we do them because we want to please Him- but there is nothing wrong with wanting the blessing of the Lord.

Will you be a willing servant, or an unwilling servant?
