Protecting Your Heart

This month's devotional comes from Mr. Luke Tullock from Heritage Baptist Church in Palmyra, N.Y.

                                                              Protecting your Heart

Proverbs 4:23 “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

February is sometimes known as “heart month”. We celebrate Valentine’s Day, and it is also known as the month that we are supposed to focus on protecting ourselves from heart disease. What is so important about the heart? Why is heart health so important? Physically, your heart pumps the blood all throughout your body. In the 1700’s a man named William Harvey discovered the circulation of the blood which revolutionized medical science! If your heart stops pumping your blood, everything else fails…your heart needs to be protected at all costs!

How about spiritually? Do you endeavor to protect your heart? The Bible teaches the importance of “keeping your heart”. Mathew 15:19 says, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.” Some of the most wicked things in the world come from the heart. So, I ask you; “What are you doing to protect your heart?” It doesn’t matter how old you are, guarding your heart is your responsibility. Yes, it is good to ask for help and to allow people to help you but only YOU truly know the condition of your heart! Remember when the prophet Samuel was sent to anoint a new king for Israel? Samuel assumed Eliab was the one, he was the oldest, the biggest and the strongest but God said he wasn’t the one. God said not to look on the height of his stature, God said Eliab’s heart wasn’t right to be king… Samuel was a man of God, and even he was fooled by Eliab, other people cannot truly know your heart, only you and God know the true condition of your heart! So, young person, what are you doing to protect your heart from spiritual disease? Once your heart stops pumping spiritual blood throughout your body, everything else fails.

So, what can you do to be sure your heart is healthy? Psalms 51:10 says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Go to God teenager, ask God for His help. Ask Him humbly to help you to have a clean heart, ask Him every single day! Heart health cannot be just prioritized in February, it must be prioritized daily! My encouragement to you is this; Starting today, begin prioritizing your heart health and NEVER stop because out of it are all the issues of life.
