The Forbidden Love
"Love not the world, nor the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him."
I John 2:5
As Christians, we are commanded not to love the things of the world. If we love the world, then not be able to love God the way we should. The Bible says in Matthew 6:24 that "No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
If we want to have a close walk with God, then we cannot let anything come before God. Lots of Christians will skip church so that they can watch a ball game. Or so that their kids can play in some kind of game. Christians will go to family reunions on Sundays and miss church. And there are countless other things that people put before God.
Would you lower your standards in order to be popular? Would you skip a mid-week service to work?
God wants our whole hearts. He doesn't want his children serving Him while they look over their shoulders at what is going on in the world. The things of this world are temporary, and they are worthless. We need to set our affections on things above (Col 3:2) and love God with everything in us.
Amen!
