A Good Friend

"Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget." -Plautus

How many friends do you have? One? Twelve? Three? Ok, here's a different question; how many good friends do you have? You know- the one that you're thinking about right now. The one who you want to tell all of your news, whether good or bad. The one that you can work with, play with, talk with, or just do nothing with. The one who challenges you, encourages you, and just makes you a better person.
So, what is a good friend? Is it someone who is just like you? From experience, I would say no. Most of my good friends have personalities opposite of mine. Is it someone who let's you order them around and does what you say? No (If you want a relationship like that, get a dog).
So, what is a good friend? What qualities should you try to have in order to be a good friend? We could never cover all of them, but through the next few weeks we will explore some of the characteristics of a good friend.

(1. Joy

Have you ever been around someone who is miserable? They're kind of annoying, aren't they? They whine and mope and complain. Then there are those people who aren't miserable, but they aren't joyful either. They're unenthusiastic about life and just aren't nice to be around.
The Bible says. "...the joy of the LORD is your strength." (Nehemiah 8:10), "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy..." (Galatians 5:22), "And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD." (Psalm 35:9).
When you walk into a room of strangers who would you be most likely talk to? The person who looks melancholy or miserable, or the person who looks pleasant and happy? If you want friends don't be grumpy all the time. Don't look grumpy all the time.
There are times when we are sad, and times when it is proper to be serious and somber. But we can have fun, too! Smile- laugh- you have a good reason to be happy. No matter how hard your life may be now, you are redeemed, you have an eternity to look forward to with the Creator who loves you unconditionally! Next time you are feeling miserable or you are feeling sorry for yourself remember these facts, and then- smile. :)

  1. When I put my trust in Jesus, He made my heart so glad that I threw away my frowning face for I could not be sad.
Oh let the joy of Jesus put a smile upon your face, and let the joy of Jesus every little frown erase. Proclaim His grace with a happy face, let His glory shine; and show the joy of Jesus on your face!
Did you ever meet a Christian who only could complain? Did you ever meet a gloomy grump who always was in pain?
Oh let the joy of Jesus put a smile upon your face, and let the joy of Jesus every little frown erase. Proclaim His Grace with a happy face, let His glory shine, and show the joy of Jesus on your face!

  2. I love Naomi’s comment (and her smiling face) and brings back a memory of Megan singing this song in children’s choir :)
