All Things Edify Not

This month's devotional comes from Miss Naomi Randall from Standing Stone Baptist Church in Monterey, TN.

"For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's." 1 Corinthians 6:20

The topic I want to talk about today is entertainment; more specifically, movies. In a way I want to address two different kinds of movies. 1st, I want to talk about unsavory movies. Some Christians seem to have no problem with watching movies filled with foul language, immodesty, and condoned immorality. This doesn't necessarily mean they don't love God, but I want to give reasons why I disagree with this use of their time. In Psalms 101:3, David, called a man after God's own heart, said "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside." Ephesians 5:11 says, "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." A few verses later the Bible says, "Redeeming the time, because the days are evil." How is it being a good steward of time if we are watching filthiness and allowing that to enter into our minds? How is that dwelling on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report and having virtue? (Philippians 4:8) It can have a lasting impact. I've seen some unsavory movies. Lines or words can easily pop into the mind that God most certainly does not take pleasure in. We need to hold fast to that which is good, and abstain from evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22)
Then there's another kind of movies I want to mention. It is easy enough to recognize the movies we most definitely should not watch, but what about other movies that aren't Christian, but they aren't full of bad things either? Well, I'm not planning on giving you a list of "do's and don'ts ", but I do want to share some verses/thoughts about this area. The Psalmist also said in Psalm 119:37, "Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way." Then in verse 113 he says, "I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love." (Remember that many Psalms are David's prayers to God.) A theme is repeated in various spots in this chapter about the Bible, God's Law. David didn't want to dwell on vanity, rather he wanted to devote much of his time to God, because he loved God's Words.
1 Corinthians 10: 23 says this, "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." So I think that is a good question to ask in this area. Is this edifying? Proverbs 10:14a says, "wise men lay up knowledge", so there may be some things that could be edifying to watch even if they aren't Christian. This is when we need to practice discretion and we can ask God for wisdom when we are unsure. "In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:6) Hopefully I gave you some good things to ponder. The Lord be praised!

  1. Amen. Very good thoughts. I agree wholeheartedly. Satan wants us to waste time on nonsense.

    1. Some movies really seem quite harmless, the problem is that it very quickly eats up the short time we have on earth. We need to be a people who are redeeming the time, because the days are evil.(Ephesians 5:16)

  2. He also wants us to be distracted from serving the Lord. He does this by filling our minds with sinful things that we wouldn’t normally put up with, but we don’t treat as sin when they are on our TV and not in real life.

    1. Yes. For instance some people would watch a movie with a terrible character, that in life they would never hang around but allow it in the movie.
