Listen to His Voice

My brother and I recently returned home from a week of camp in PA. While we were gone, my parents took care of both of our dogs for us. I noticed when I came home that my dog was not as quick to respond to my voice as she had been before I left. She would still listen to me, but I now had to give the command more than once. I also noticed that she responded to my mom' s voice more quickly than she had a week earlier. Now that I've been home for a few days my dog responds as quickly as she did before I left.

It's amazing how quickly the dog learned to respond to a different voice. I think we can do the same thing with the Lord. We stop listening to His voice, just for a short time, and we start listening to the world. We quickly learn to respond to the world's commands instead of the Lord's. It takes a very short time for our hearts to learn to respond to the wrong voice.

I was only away from my dog for 5 days. Imagine what it would have been like if I was gone for 2 weeks, or a month? How long would it have taken to get her to respond to me as quickly as she did before I had left? Maybe you skip your devotions just for a day. Or you don't pray for hours at a time. The longer you stop listening to God the longer it's going to take you to get back to where you were in your relationship with Him. Perhaps you have committed a sin and praying makes you feel guilty. So, rather than confess it, you just stop praying. How long might that go on? A week? A month? Every day that goes by without praying damages your relationship with God more. And the more it's damaged, the more time it will take to repair it. You can't grow in your relationship with God if you have to keep repairing what you broke.

Listen for God's voice constantly. Don't say 'Amen' after praying for 10 minutes in the morning and not say anything else to God all day. Keep an open-ended conversation going with Him throughout the day. Ask Him to speak to you often so that you will always know the sound of His voice. And when (when, not if!) He speaks, respond immediately!
