By My Works
For quite a while I have had the verse James 2:18 in the sidebar. It says, "Yea, a man may say, thou hast faith, and I have works. Show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works." I have this verse up constantly to remind us that our works are a testimony to our salvation. Today I have some thoughts on this verse.
First, works are not the basis of our salvation. We are saved by grace, through faith in Christ Jesus, and by this alone! There is no way we can add to our take away from that.
"...I will shew thee my faith by my works." Are you known only for what you don't do? "Those are really good teens! Just think, they could be out doing drugs or robbing stores, but they don't!" People should know that you don't do those things, but you should also be doing good things. "Those teens really love the Lord. They serve in their churches, they're a strong witness for God!" Your works should clearly define your faith and separate you from the world.
God's Word commands us not to sin, but it also tells us that we are "created unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk with them." and "That the man of God should be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." And in Titus 3:8 it says, "This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men." Show your faith by your works!
