I Go a Fishing
"There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes."
-John 21:3-6-
Peter was obviously a leader amongst the disciples. He was often the first to act or speak(often without thinking!). Here he is shown after Jesus' death. It seems that Peter didn't exactly know what to do next, since Jesus wasn't there to follow. So, he simply went back to what he was used to and comfortable with; fishing. There are 3 key thoughts I want to mention from this passage over the next 3 weeks.
1. Peter Decided what he was Going to do
Peter said, "I go a fishing". What had Jesus told Peter he was to do now? Be a fisher, yes. But a fisher of men, not of fish. Without Jesus there to follow around and guide him step by step, Peter went back to his old way of life. Peter could have relied on what Jesus had taught him. Jesus had given Peter so much instruction during their time together, but Peter ignored all of that and just decided to go fishing.
When life becomes unclear, it can be tempting to fall back on what we want to do. But we have so much instruction in God's Word that will guide us in what we are supposed to do. Don't go back to your old life! Instead; "...continue in the things thou hast learned, and hast been assured of..."
