Who has the Throne?

"Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Romans 6:9-23

In this passage it says, "let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body...neither yield your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin". As Christians we are not to allow Satan to use us as his tool. If we do, we are sinning, and we have become an "instrument of unrighteousness". We cannot allow sin to reign in our lives. If we let it, we are not living for the glory of God. It says here that we are "made free from sin". We don't have to serve our sinful nature anymore! Before salvation you are controlled by sin and the desire for sin. But when you are saved you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you and you are free to make the right choices. Living in sin is living in bondage. When you were saved you were set free to live for God.

It says here, "now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness". We are not only to not serve sin, we are also commanded to serve God with our lives. "...but yield yourselves unto God...". "Yielding yourself" can look like many different things. It could be letting go of a sin that you have been "serving", or it could be surrendering to do something you know you God wants you to do(not just something 'big' like a call to the ministry...has God been speaking to you about helping to clean your church, or to sit with an elderly person during a service?). There are many other ways that we could yield ourselves to God that I won't mention, but whatever God is bringing to your mind as you read this is the area that you need to yield in. Maybe you don't realize what you are holding back. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you. He will!

Take some time today and take a look at what or who you are serving.

Are you letting sin reign in your life, or does God rule on the throne of your heart?

  1. Thank God for Romans 6! It's the Emancipation Proclamation for Christians... We may not always "FEEL" free, but we understand by faith and "reckon" ourselves free positionally in Christ. Christ has taken off the shackles... Now, enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit, we CAN say NO to sin, and YES to God! It's a constant battle, but with God we have a fighting chance! Good stuff Miss Megan!
