Hear Reproof

He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Proverbs 15:32

What is your initial response when someone corrects you? Is it annoyance, anger, frustration, and pride? Do you make it clear that you don't want the persons opinion? Or is your response thankfulness, humility, and a teachable spirit? We are commanded by God to help each other and one of the ways we can strengthen other Christians is to 'speak the truth in love' and, with the right spirit, correct them. But if we don't allow ourselves to be corrected, we can't be helped. In this verse it says that if you refuse instruction you despise yourself. It is so foolish to let pride stop us from receiving correction and advice. Your parents, pastor, and other authorities in your life want to help you do the right thing. They know more than you do! If they come to you with a concern about something you've been doing or saying, don't get angry and ignore it- listen! They aren't saying that they don't make mistakes- they simply love you and want to help you make the right choices. If a good Christian friend comes to you and says they've noticed that your attitude hasn't been the best lately, don't get mad at them. They aren't trying to say that they are better than you- they are just trying to help because they want to be a good friend.

"...he that heareth reproof getteth understanding". Do you want to understand how to make wise decisions and live life in a way that will please the Lord? Hear reproof! And don't just wait for someone to come tell you what you're doing wrong- ask for advice. Any youth leader would love it if you came to him and asked if he saw any area of your life that you could improve on, and for advice on how to do so. Listen to the people in your life who love you and love the Lord, and you will get understanding.

  1. Another great post, Megan! We all struggle with correction - even adults. You mentioned pride. That's a big one! May God help us to humble ourselves and love truth more than our own ego!
