Saintly Madness
"I pray that the Lord will give you a hallowed dare-devil spirit...that is called by the cultured citizen of Christendom fanaticism, but known to God as that saintly madness that led His Son through bloody sweat and hot tears to glory!" -Jim Elliot
Jim Elliot was a missionary pilot and Christian martyr that died in 1956 while taking the Gospel to a tribe in Ecuador. His words show us that he was bold for the cause of Christ. I am sure that there were many people who thought that Jim Elliot and his friends were fools to try and take the Gospel to the people who were known to be brutal. There were most likely those that said that "they threw their lives away" and "what a waste". But those men were courageous Christians that fulfilled God's calling on their lives. And those people have now been reached with the Gospel, starting with the families of those men.
People around you might look at you like you're crazy when you run hard and fast after Jesus, but God is looking down on you with a smile. Your enthusiasm for His cause will please Him. The Bible says that the unsaved will see the light and comprehend it not. So to the world, we may look crazy. To the people who like to come to church on Sunday morning and then leave their Bible on the coffee table for the other 6 days of the week- we may look like fanatics.
We are to be like Jesus, and most people would probably say that He was a little crazy. He suffered and died for people that He knew would reject Him and hurt Him more! That really doesn't make any sense- until you take into account the crazy love that Jesus has, and that we are to try and have for everyone!
May Jesus' love for us cause us to be bold proclaimers of the Gospel to everyone. May we have the crazy love and saintly madness that possessed Jesus as He suffered, hung on the cross, died, and rose again for us.
Thank you for reminding us of this great Christian man! He life AND DEATH are still inspiring believers today! A waste? I think not!
