Help Him Up

"For if they fall, the other will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, for he hath not another to help him up"

Ecclesiastes 4:10

A lot of times we hear this verse used when someone is talking about the importance of having good, Godly friends. But what about being that friend? What do you do when your friend falls? Now "falling" could mean a couple different things. One way your friend could fall is that they just mess up. They disrespect their parents, they tell a lie, they just do something wrong. What do you do in a situation like this? You could ignore it and hope it goes away, and act like they've done nothing wrong. That certainly isn't helping them up. That's just acting like it's ok and that you're alright with it. You could defend their actions. If someone corrects them or points out what they've done, your friend may be upset. If you get upset along with your friend and justify the way they're acting you may make your friend happy with you, but you definitely will not be helping them in the long run. The Bible says in Ephesians 4:15 to speak the truth in love. Go to your friend kindly, meekly, and point out that what they did was wrong. Make sure they know that you just care about them and that you want to be a good friend to them.

Another meaning of "falling" could be a more dramatic falling away from faith. What do you do if your friend gradually starts pulling away from the things of God? If they don't want to serve God with their life, what do you do? First of all, pray for them all the time. Don't cut them off- continue to talk and be friendly to them if you can, and encourage them. Remind them that you miss them at church and invite them to come back. Don't make them your best friend, because they will pull you away if you are constantly with them. But pray for them- and never give up on them.

Be that friend that will help another up when they need it. Be the person that your friend can depend on to hold them accountable. Don't let things slip by to keep a friend.

And make your best friend Jesus. He'll never let you down.

  1. :) Thanks for this! It was short... but sweet. I have been thinking lately about being a better friend. Love for your friends is not blind... but it is kind.

  2. This is good stuff Megan! Often when young people get away from God, people will avoid them like the plague. Not quite sure that is a Christlike response...There is certainly a distancing that may need to happen, but they should ALWAYS feel loved with a Christlike love. When they are ready to "come back" they shouldn't have to wonder if they will be welcome.
