Throw on the Wood

"Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out..."
Proverbs 26:20

A few days ago, my family was having a bonfire in our backyard. The fire was started and burning well, but it needed more fuel. We had a box of pieces of scrap wood that we had used to start the fire sitting nearby so I began to throw some of those onto the fire. "If you want the fire to grow you're going to have to throw some bigger fuel on." my Dad commented. It was a casual comment, but my cousin who was standing next to me (a very smart person) immediately drew a spiritual comment from the remark. He told me I had permission to use it, so this is his thought in my words.

Our fire was just like our spiritual lives. We can keep them burning by throwing little bits of kindling onto it but if we want to grow we need to add some logs and big chunks of wood. You could probably survive on three church services a week, but if you want to grow your fire need logs- Bible reading, prayer time, time with other Christians, and other positive influences.
A tiny fire isn't good for much. It doesn't give off much heat or light, and it would take a very long time to cook anything. If you want to be a help to others, to be a big light, you have to grow your fire. If you let it start to fade, or die you won't be able to do anything for the Lord.
If you want to grow your fire, throw on some logs!

  1. Amen! Gathering wood for our own fire, and also giving wood to others ( that is, edification, encouraging others to grow in the Lord)
