What a Day will Bring Forth
"Boast not thyself of to morrow, for thou knowest not what a day will bring forth."
Proverbs 27:1
"Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."
James 4:14
Tonight in church my Pastor asked for prayer for a family whose 8-year-old daughter is dying. A couple of weeks ago a family that goes to our church lost their one-year-old daughter in a tragic accident. At the end of our service tonight Pastor had a time of prayer and asked everyone to pray for the family he had made the announcement about. I prayed for the family and their daughter, and then added something else. Starting with the 4th-6th graders and working my way down to the babies in the nursery, I prayed for every kid in our church by name. I looked at the little girls sitting in front of me and realized that there was no guarantee that they would be there next Sunday. It was a terrible thought.
You have no idea what could come tomorrow. We can't live in fear of what might happen, but we also need to remember these verses and pray for the people in our lives. I have two thoughts regarding these verses.
My first thought is that since we don't know what will happen or when it will happen, we better decide what we believe now, before something bad happens. We need to be firm in our beliefs and have a strong relationship with Christ before tragedy strikes. That way we'll have peace and strength when we go through it.
My second thought is that every day, love the people around you. Your little brother might drive you up the wall, but if he was in the hospital dying, you wouldn't be annoyed with him. When your Dad gets home from work, spend some time talking with him. Give your mom a hug. Play a game with your siblings. There's no guarantee that any of them will be with you tomorrow. Thank God for them, love them, pray for them. Never take them for granted. You know not what a day will bring forth.
