Let's Talk about Jesus

This past Friday night we had a youth activity at my church, and when it came time for the devotional, our youth leader asked if any of us had an idea of why we don't see revival. We threw out a couple ideas and then my cousin piped up from behind me. "I think sometimes people get on fire but then they just don't talk about it." 'Brilliant', I thought. Because I happen to know that Jane puts a lot of time and study into her personal devotions, but I only know it because I saw her notebook when I was at her house. And I know that Fred asks older wiser people a lot of questions and asks for advice, but it's not because he told me(both those names are entirely fabricated by the way). I know that my friends want to live for Jesus, but we definitely don't talk about it as much as we should.

We all know it can be awkward to try and start a conversation about something spiritual- it shouldn't be, but it is. People are always talking about "normalizing" things. Well why don't we normalize teens talking about Jesus. Discussing the sermons we hear. Sharing the verse we're memorizing.

Now it's easy to say we're going to do this- however, we have to do it on purpose. Because we have to realize that a serious, spiritual conversation just isn't going to start over a game of dodgeball. It's difficult to have a conversation like that when we feel like we're going to be interrupted in 34 seconds. When you're standing around yapping with your friends about what you did the last three days, stick something in there about your devotions. If you're texting your friend, ask them which sermon they enjoyed the most on Sunday. We can't expect the conversations to just happen; we have to choose to have them. The devil doesn't want us to talk about spiritual things; he's going to keep us as distracted as he can.

So let's do it; start building the habit this week. Let's talk about Jesus.

I'm glad we have Fred's, Jane's and Megan's in our youth group that desire to know the Lord better 😊

  3. I needed this. I'm much like "Fred and Jane". I'm studying the Bible and asking for wisdom, but with some of my friends I don't really discuss these things that much. It's a sad thing if I miss talking about that which is most important.
    Thank you for this!!
